Tucked away in the heart of Northridge, CA, The Oakridge Estate is a captivating reminder of Hollywood’s Golden Age. This historic property, once the home of screen legend Barbara Stanwyck and later comedian Jack Oakie, invites visitors to experience the elegance and charm of early 20th-century celebrity life. From its unique architecture to its storied past, Oakridge offers a journey into another era.

A Glimpse into Hollywood’s Past

In 1937, Barbara Stanwyck commissioned architect Robert Finkelhor to design a grand 6,000-square-foot Tudor-English Revival home on a hilltop in Northridge. The estate was part of a 130-acre thoroughbred horse ranch co-owned with Zeppo Marx and included redwood paneling, cork floors, and even a marble bathtub—one of Stanwyck’s personal touches. Known originally as Marwyck, the estate was a symbol of luxury and a reflection of the Hollywood lifestyle of the time.

By 1941, Stanwyck sold the property to comedian Jack Oakie, who renamed it Oakridge. He and his wife, actress Victoria Horne, lived there for over 60 years. Their long tenure helped preserve much of the home’s original design and features. Visitors today can still admire details like the grand mural room, original fixtures, and Stanwyck’s spacious walk-in closet, offering a true sense of the estate’s original splendor.

Preserved for the Community

In recognition of its historical and cultural value, the City of Los Angeles acquired the Oakridge Estate in 2010 and designated it a Historic-Cultural Monument. The estate is now maintained by the Department of Recreation and Parks and is open to the public for docent-led tours. These 75-minute guided experiences give guests a deeper look into the estate’s history, architecture, and the lives of its former residents.

Surrounding the estate is the peaceful Oakridge Estate Park, where guests can enjoy walking paths, open green spaces, and picnic areas. It’s an ideal place to relax before or after a tour and reflect on the rich history of the property.
